Are NFC chips pre-installed in smartphones?

Near-field communication requires the usage of a suitable device or the purchase of an individual SIM card or microSD card with an NFC chip inserted. For the phone to interact with other NFC devices and tags, NFC must be built in the phone or loaded via a SIM or microSD card. As the technology becomes more widely adopted, more smartphone manufacturers are including NFC chips in their products.

Those with NFC-enabled smartphones can use a service like Google Wallet, which comes pre-installed on the device. Users can select a previously used payment method, enter a new payment method, or adjust contactless payment settings by swiping through the menus.

Other providers, such as PayPal's mobile app for smartphones, have downloaded apps and include NFC payments as an option within the programme. When two smartphones are bumped together, money can be transferred from one user account to another.

Other methods are available for those who do not have NFC capable phones but still want to access the services. When a consumer buys a SIM card or a microSD card with an embedded NFC chip, they can insert it into their phone and use NFC technology. Once installed, the smartphone works in the same way as any other NFC-enabled device. However, once the SIM or microSD card is removed, the user will no longer be able to use NFC technology.

Users who have NFC compatible gadgets or have NFC installed on their smartphones should always lock and protect their phones with a password. If the phone is lost or stolen, having a password on the phone stops a thief from unlocking it and using services like Google Wallet to buy things or send money from the owner's PayPal account to the criminal's own account.
